Osteopathy in Canada
Graduates of the Canadian College of Osteopathy (CCO) receive the title, DO(MP), Diploma in Osteopathic Manual Practice.
The College of Osteopathic studies (College d'Etudes Osteopathiques--CEO)
was first established in 1981 in Montreal, Quebec, by two French osteopaths, Philippe Druelle, DO, and Jean Guy Sicotte, DO. Manual osteopathic techniques were taught at the college by osteopaths trained in Europe.
This leading edge program was expanded to form The Canadian College of Osteopathy (CCO) in Toronto in 1991. The college has since expanded to schools in Vancouver and Halifax. The CCO is a member of the Association of the Traditional Osteopathic Colleges of Canada (ATOCC).
The CCO offers an intensive, five year, part-time program consisting of clinical and academic study in osteopathic manual techniques. The course is open to people who already hold a university degree in a health science or to people who are health professionals (ie. Massage therapists, athletic therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors etc.) A thesis is required at the end of the program and must accepted by an International Jury of Osteopaths to be granted the title, DO(MP).
During the five year course, 34 sessions are offered, each with a particular focus. Most of the courses deal with a specific area of the body, such as the pelvis, shoulder girdle or the neck and their anatomical, physiological, biomechanical, and reflexive interrelationships. Included in each specific course are the theory, methodology, and practical and clinical elements related to the osteopathic treatment. Palpation skills are emphasized and techniques from the three disciplines, structural, craniosacral and visceral are taught, practiced, and evaluated.
