Osteopathy is a Philosophy
“Motion is the first and only evidence of life...Osteopathy is the law of mind, matter and motion”
(A.T. Still, DO, 1908)
Our cells are filled with a powerful life force that metabolizes, replicates, and organizes into tissues, organs, and structures. This kinetic energy is essential to sustain all life processes such as nerve conduction and fluid movement throughout the body to nourish the cells and to allow the immune system to do its job.
There are two main emphases in osteopathic treatment:
- the treatment of physical ills by normalizing (and mobilizing) body structure and function.
- the importance of health and well being in the broadest sense including mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
Dr. Still believed the origins of illness to be caused by anatomic disturbances followed by physiologic discord while still acknowledging the potential detrimental effects of heredity, environmental conditions, lifestyle and psychological stresses.
“It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has” (Hippocrates).
